These are just some of the things that set our graduate programme apart.
• Hands-on support and guidance, throughout your time on the programme.
• Sponsorship and mentoring from people who have been there and done it before you.
• A well-balanced combination of on-the-job learning and real-life project work.
• The chance to help shape the future of a £billion organisation.
From day one, you’ll be expected to take responsibility and make decisions about real business issues. Part of a small intake of graduates, you’ll embark on a series of placements across different areas of the business. But you certainly won’t be on your own. You’ll have the opportunity to work with everyone in the business from contact centre advisors through to directors and external suppliers. Throughout your time, you’ll be sponsored by one of our directors who will oversee your progress. Moreover, you will be mentored by a senior manager to ensure you’re getting the most out of your placements, and help you manage your career into a permanent role at the end of the programme.
Our graduate programme will provide you with the foundations to build a successful career within Motability Operations.
The Graduate Programme
You’ll start your time with the company with a comprehensive induction into our business. Firstly, you will spend a couple of weeks in our Customer Services department. Here you’ll learn how we operate and have the opportunity to listen in to calls with some of our 580,000 customers. After that we’ll give you an overview of many of our other departments – HR, Marketing, Technical Services, Vehicle Remarketing (Sales), Business Systems (IT), Asset Risk, Finance, Dealer Relations, Dealer Contact Services, Pricing, Manufacturer Relations and Legal. Which means that by the end of your first month, you should have a much better idea of what’s what and who’s who.
Once we’re sure you’ve got a good feel for our work and our customers, it’s time to take a closer look at how we operate.
Placements
The graduate programme is an 18 month programme, consisting of a number of placements – typically this is three placements of around six months duration, although this may vary from time to time
Placements are largely determined by your mentor according to business needs, and the opportunities available at the time, but of course we’ll always try to take your preferences into consideration. Most importantly we take into account your career aspirations and how the business can help you progress and develop.
Wherever you are placed, each area and department is as interesting and rewarding as the next.
We have two sites, in London and Bristol, and you will almost certainly have a placement at each of the locations.
The opportunity to work in different areas of the business and across both locations provides a fantastic insight and understanding into the business as a whole. It also offers exceptional exposure which helps you to build relationships, develop knowledge and lay down the foundations of a successful and rewarding career.
Roles
Throughout your time on the programme, we will be keeping an eye on where we think your ‘final’ role (the permanent role you will move into at the end of the 18 months) may be. This view starts at the outset, during the recruitment process. When you apply, we ask to you to indicate on your application form the type of department you would like to work in. For example, this may be in our Customer Services, Sales, Account Management, or operational support departments. The types of roles available vary each year.
Once we know the types of departments and roles you are interested in, we ensure that our recruitment process is aligned to this - typically you would be interviewed by a relevant senior manager, who will then become your mentor and oversee your career on the programme when you join us. Your mentor will be from the department you are most interested in, and the one in which we envisage you being most suited to at the end of the programme.
However, we do know that sometimes things change, and the programme remains flexible should your career aspirations change, once you know more about us and the types of opportunities available.
Your final role at the end of the programme may be at either our Bristol or London site, and you should remain flexible with regards to location, in order to maximise the number of career opportunities available.
Training and Support
As well as our comprehensive induction, and on-the-job learning, we also offer a structured training programme which may include Presentation Skills, and Communication & Assertiveness training to name just a few.
We offer continuous support and guidance on our graduate programme - even our CEO and board of directors play a significant role. Each graduate will be allocated a director sponsor who will oversee your progress, and support the management of your career throughout the programme.
In addition, you will be allocated a mentor - a senior operational manager who will more closely work with you throughout the programme, providing feedback and guidance to ensure you get the most out of your placements. At times this may be challenging, but you can be sure that they will help you develop and grow. Typically, this mentor would be involved in your recruitment, and would envisage potentially placing you in their own departments for your role in the business at the end of the programme.
What’s more, everyone gets allocated a buddy who has previously been through the programme. Your buddy can share their experiences and will be able to help you, offer guidance or even just point you in the right direction.
